One of our projects for APLING 603 (Cross-Cultural Perspectives) was to read and discuss a book on linguistics and then present a review (including summary, critique, recommendation, questions, favorite quotes, and connections to our course) for our classmates.

“You’re a linguist? How many languages do you speak?” “You want to study linguistics? What do you bring to the table?

What Do You Bring to the Table? or, A Cheesy Extended Metaphor (that, while cheesy, is still helping me to envision and articulate my goals) “What do you bring to the table?” is an idiomatic expression in English meaning “What do you provide that will be beneficial to this group?” It is often used in a business setting or an interview scenario to determine a newcomer’s potential role in the office. I don’t know its origins, but I like to think of the expression as coming from a potluck dinner party. What will you bring to the table? I’ll bring plates and napkins. I’ll bring a side dish. I’ll bring dessert. Maybe some people also show up with flowers or a bottle of wine. Ideally, every guest brings something that contributes to the overall enjoyment of the meal. An Academic Adventure

I've wanted to attend graduate school for many years now, and the stars finally aligned. I found an online program that I can do from home at my own pace (anywhere from 2 - 5 years) in a subject that I enjoy AND will have practical applications. And I have the time and resources and mental energy to do this now. So I applied and was accepted to University of Massachusetts Boston for a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics with a concentration in Foreign Language Pedagogy. I'm not sure exactly what I'll do when I'm finished, but it will open up some possibilities for me. And if I go back to the same thing I was doing before having kids (teaching high school German), I will go into it with more education and training. My first course is coming to an end in a few weeks. It's been a great one to start with. It's all about technology in the language classroom.
